About the Animal Shelter

Since 1939, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society has been serving northern New Mexico The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society (SFAS&HS) is the largest animal shelter and care facility in northern New Mexico. We serve more than 10,000 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals each year. As a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we receive nearly all of our funding through private donors in our community and beyond. SFAS&HS contracts with the city and county of Santa Fe to care for homeless and stray animals, as well as those brought through our front doors. We work to reunite people with their lost animal companions, and re-home those animals that have gone unclaimed into new homes through our adoption program. Low- and no-cost spay/neuter programs address the overpopulation problems that our community faces. Humane education programs in our local schools teach children to respect and care for all living creatures. Partnered with our community, we work for change in the lives of our companion animals and to end the suffering of all animals. The mission of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society is to reduce animal suffering by curbing overpopulation, teaching compassion, and supporting healthy relationships between people and animals.

Adoption Process

About Adoptions If you have made the careful decision to bring a companion animal into your life, chances are that SFAS&HS has a dog, cat, kitten, puppy, ferret, rabbit, guinea pig, or other fuzzy critter that will match your home and lifestyle. Matchmaking is an important part of our adoption process, and we pride ourselves on helping hopeful animal lovers find a companion that will fit their lifestyle. Think about how much time you have to spend with a new animal. Think about the time involved: a healthy puppy can live for 15 to 20 years! Remember that settling in a new four-legged family member can take some time and adjustment. Bear in mind that just like us, your companion animal will need food and supplies and have to visit a doctor from time to time. We invite you to visit our animals in the shelter; at All Fur Friends, our one-stop adoption shop at 2570 Camino Entrada, and at our satellite adoption facility inside PetsMart (3561 Zafarano Drive) or online. Once you have an idea what you’re looking for, one of our adoption counselors will visit with you and share some ideas about which of our residents would be best suited to you. All animals are spayed or neutered and microchipped before leaving and receive the required age-appropriate vaccines. The required licenses for city and county residents are available at the shelter as you adopt! Adoption is a partnership between the adopter, the shelter and the animal. We are committed to making that partnership work for everyone. Fees Please Note: all vaccines are administered as age- and health-appropriate. Puppies under four months: $150 + $6 microchip registration* + licensing fee if applicable** Fee includes six free S.T.A.R. puppy classes, spay/neuter, microchip and registration with Found Animals, DA2PP, Bordetella and rabies vaccination as age-appropriate.
