Chatham Kent Animal Rescue
About the Animal Shelter
I became very aware of the plight of animals in high kill shelters in 2008, especially for senior dogs. I made a pledge to adopt a senior dog which my husband and I did, along with a cat. As a volunteer with our local OSPCA, I helped the staff every weekend for almost one year in 2009. I started to read horrifying stories of healthy dogs who ere going to be killed to make room for more healthy dogs who were unwanted. I personally donated enough money to cover the costs of rescuing 14 dogs from Missouri. Five of those dogs were moved via volunteer drivers to my home town where I found wonderful homes for three of the dogs and the other two are now part of our family. Wanting to do more, I started driving as a volunteer for Open Arms Transport. Still not feeling as though I were doing enough, I posted messages on our local Kijiji to see if other people in our area felt the same as I did - wanting to save innocent animals and helping to find them permanent homes. My dream of starting a rescue started in October 2010 in the livingroom of a local couple who were very supportive of my vision. We started our rescue officially January 2011 and am very proud of our accomplishments to date.
Shelters Service Area
Chatham Kent and surrounding areas. Have had adoptions in 3 US states and one in Quebec. As long as we have rescue associates to help with home visits, we consider every adopter's location.
Adoption application is required and takes precedence over email requests. References are required and home visit by approved volunteer or rescue associate if long distance adoption. Adoption Contract is signed and adoption fee is paid if home visit with dog goes well. Adopters have 14 days adjustment period to return dog if things are not working for any reason - adoptiion fee is refunded. AFter 14 days, no refund fee - our dogs are always to be returned to our rescue's foster program.
Meet the Pets
Our adoptable pets are generally only available to meet by home visit with one of our volunteers. Occasionally at events, we will invite our foster families to bring the dogs to meet visitors at events. Because we have been doing very well with our adoptions, many of our dogs in foster care are either adopted or have pending adoptions at many of the events we attend.
